The text for Rising was primarily constructed from interviews carried out with artists, activists, journalists and politicians who could be seen as contemporary equivalents of the people who took action in 1916, as well as newspaper articles, archive material, poetry and philosophical writings. The young people themselves also interviewed family and friends and asked the following three questions: What do you believe in? Have you ever been moved to protest something? Is there a particular song that represents a significant moment in your life? These materials were transcribed and shared in the rehearsal room, and some of those testimonies also found their way into the play.
